Back when Tammy and I started playing with Mike, we decided to call ourselves Distant Stars. It's a nice, evocative name that comes from the title of one of the collections of short stories by Samuel R Delany, one of my favorite authors. It was a nice name, and I liked it. Unfortunately (for me), a lot of our friends thought it sucked. So, at Jamie's behest, we ditched the name and decided to go nameless until we could come up with a replacement.

Oh, the hilarity and mirth that has resulted! Never, ever tell your friends you're trying to come up with a band name. You will be drowned beneath a torrent of silly suggestions, most of which would be great if you were a bad pop-punk band, but aren't so great if you're trying to do the whole band thing with a certain measure of gravitas and seriousness of intent. Or pretension. Call it what you must.

Anyway, we've been tossing ideas around (Drama Club, Sonoluminescence, Smoke Jaguar), and none of them have really worked for the band as a whole. Our friends have come up with some truly strange and goofy names (Puppy Queerbait, Beanpole, Left To My Own Devices, Zombie Entourage), and none of those have really worked for us, either. So this Thursday, when we all got together to eat dinner and hang out outside of the dim cave that is our practice space, we were throwing around still more names.

This time, we did OK, coming up with three names that we're now considering: Daylight, an Egg, and Fraught. The running favorite seems to be 'an Egg'. I'm not sure why, either, but it works for me.

But we're not finished yet, and this seems like as good a place as any to leave open a forum for suggesting names and / or commenting on the three front- runners we've put up here. What do you all think?
