conferencing.

Although I wasn't able to register in time to attend BLOGGERCON at Stanford Law School (and lord knows I enjoy every opportunity I have to return to my blissful alma mater), I was fortunate to register in time for the California Banker Association's exciting seminar on SB-1 and other privacy legislation today. Woohoo. Although this might sound interesting, trust me it was not. This was not some exciting privacy conference put on by an exciting and sexy group like EFF or trustE. Rather, it was a bunch of bankers sitting around discussing the type of paper that a privacy notice needs to be sent out on, and the mind-bending battle over the open question of federal pre-emption of state banking regulation. I could barely sit in my seat.

Finally I looked to my side and found someone else pull out his blackberry. HURRAY! I pulled mine out too. Oh shoot. I actually had work emails waiting for me there.

The best part was leaving the place among the stiff suits. As we exited embarcadero 3, one of the banking lawyers' cups or something got caught in the revolving door. I heard a crash and saw something go flying. Everyone was still.

I said, "Wow, not good to have something break among so many lawyers, haha." And no one even looked at me! I didn't even get a mercy smile.

Stiffs.

I'm hoping to leave work today at a reasonable hour, but

... why does the sentence "I'm hoping to leave work today at a reasonable hour" always have a "but" after it? Really, I want it to have an AND. And, I'm gonna do it!

But not before I post the trackback to the post where Marc Canter talked about Curtis and me. Lord knows I'm trying to get good at this trackback thing, so more people can come on here and ask my why I bother posting - after all, who cares what I have to say?

Well, I am proud to say that I have been posting personal comments about my uninteresting and unimportant life almost daily since mid-1995. And that in itself is pretty interesting! So there.

Here is the trackback to Marc's site:

Elan in a Hat

elan-hat, originally uploaded by rle.

Taken over Memorial Day, 2004, when Elan was about 14 months old. I'm just now finally playing around with Flickr's blog capabilities. This stuff works GREAT!

Tracking Back to the 90's :)

Maybe the happy times (hey, some of us LIKED the bubble!) are returning. It is official that once again there is a cool company where tons of my friends work, getting money from other friends. Who doesn't love Six Apart? Maybe if moveable type had been around in 1999, I wouldn't have retired my personal web page. (Although, it's probably a good thing that I did!) Anyway, CONTRATULATIONS, Six Apart! You couldn't have found yourself better investors. (And investors: you found yourself a KILLER company!) Just don't ever listen to David Hornik when he tells you stories about what it was like to have the room directly across from me at Branner freshman year at Stanford. None of us like to admit actions taken in the 80's.

I wonder if I'll get tracked back, then rush back to my computer to edit this entry. Ah hell. Life is all about entries that should be edited but aren't.

Anyway, here it is:

travel

Now that I take Highway 280 to work, my cube is about 60 miles away from my home. Given the size of the parking lot, and my time arriving compared to others who live closer, I park usually about 2 city blocks away from the company's front door. My cube is on the 4th floor of Building ELEVEN (the first 9 buildings, to be fair, are at the company's OTHER campus). My cube is near the windows. The bathroom is only about 200 yards away, but the break room, with the soda machines and coffee, is about a block away. The cube-break room - bathroom loop takes me about 7 minutes start to finish.

Who says I don't travel much for work?

visions of adulthood

When I was a child, I never had any fantasies or hopes about a wedding. I really never wanted a dress or thought it would be fun to parade around looking like a cupcake. Never was my style. And when I did get married, I was true to myself. I wore a beautiful Versace pants suit.

But the one vision I did have as a child was that of being a mother. In particular, a working mother. And that vision involved having my child come to work with me every now and then. Maybe this is because I used to go to work with my father on Saturdays, and even though most people would never believe it, those were some of my happiest and most vivid memories -- Saturdays at the law office playing with the copying machine and looking at the big books that I didn't know how to read.

I desperately hope that some day I can bring my daughter to work with me. But I refuse to drive her 60 miles on the freeway for that. Or maybe we are just destined to have happy visions of adulthood not come true. In those cases, maybe the solution just is to write a novel.

Unposted.

I have been told that I need to update this more. That is true. Here are the main reasons I don't update this more:

(1) I actually keep a print journal! Considering that I have had an online journal since 1995 (well, that I retired in 1999, 2 years before blogging even became popular), this is so old-school for me. We keep a weekly journal of goings-on for our daughter, Elan's school. Most of the interesting Elan stuff goes in there.

(2) When I do have free time I am desperate to get home and hang out with Elan. Because a one-hour (at least) commute always lies between myself and Elan, this excuse is tired. There are other ways to spend more time with Elan and I'm thinking about working on them.

(3) Most of the things I want to say (e.g. about work) I can't say (because I work here). I'm going to start to say some of those things anyway, at least in ways that I can say them.

(4) Do people really want to hear the things I obsess about? Here they are: (1) Elan's child care/ daycare / preschool/ school situation. (2) my commute, and how much I dislike it. (3) the desire to make more money. (4) endless remodeling that never seems to be done. Yes, yes, I guess those things are interesting!

I promise, starting today, that I will post more. And I'll figure out how to upload photos too. I have some stuff at flickr. Stay tuned.
