zoolove

I love the SF Zoo. I do. I've struggled in the past dealing with my feelings about zoos, and animals in captivity, and it was a difficult struggle - it sometimes still is. I think the SF Zoo is doing a lot of good - with various programs, redesigns, and the community. I'm proud to be a member.

For the last few months, i've been excited about stealing some of my friends on one of their weekly Sundays, and taking them all to my Zoo - getting to share my lemurs with Soph & Aimee & Heidi (and hopefull Patrick!), making them a picnic, and leisurely moving through Sunday.

Just yesterday, we finally booked a date, for a Sunday at the end of this month. And today, in the food section of the Chron (the only section of the Chron i read regularly, as it turns out), there's this lovely article about living in the zookeepers house. Serendipity strikes - it's time to share it.

(attention-seeking)

I nearly have two relevant comments, today!

my wife is a zookeeper at Taronga Zoo, Sydney, and was recently working in the Asian Division: lions and tigers and bears (oh my!). she's on the African division at the moement, with giraffe, gorilla, elephants.

i hear what you're saying about the captivity part of zoos: but also remember, very significant work on animal husbandry happens every day in zoos, with the knowledge translated to the wild. in a perfect world, zoos would only need to exist to provide lazy researchers easy access.....the zoo would be closer than the Savannah...:-)

Ben! When did you get married?? That's news!

Yeah, the research that goes on in zoos is a good thing - the programs that the SF Zoo are working with Duke University on wrt lemurs and reintroduction to Madagascar are only a few of the ones that make me feel good about what my zoo does. As with anything, a lot depends on the people who run the place, and how they run it.
